"Number 1 In My Book! After a very frustrating day trying to get service for a failed AC system (113 degrees and elevated humidity), I checked and called Experience. They we very apologetic and said it may be at least 7 PM (same day) before we could get anyone out. Sheesh! I was talking to companies that said they MIGHT be able to get to us by Tuesday (this is Friday). We were called by Sam at 3:30 and he said he would be there shortly after 4 PM. He arrived when he said he would and took all of 10 minutes to diagnose the problem and cause of said problem. How do I know if I should purchase a new HVAC system?

Replacing your air conditioning system is a huge investment. Here are some things to consider: 1. The age of your air conditioner. The life of an air conditioner is somewhere between 10 and 20 years. So, if your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it may be time for a replacement. 2. Rising energy bills. As air conditioners get older, they become less energy efficient. To see if your air conditioner is losing efficiency, compare your utility bills over the past few summers. If your costs are rising, it could be a sign that your air conditioner is wearing out. 3. Leaking refrigerant. Not only is refrigerant expensive, but refrigerant leaks will cause the compressor to eventually go out. The type of refrigerant that your air conditioner needs may also cause you problems down the road. 4. The cost of repair. If the repair is more than 50% the cost of a new unit, it is probably better to buy a new unit. Also consider how long you plan to be in the home, if longer then 5 years you may want to replace over repair.

Why is my air conditioner freezing up?

Nearly all air conditioner freeze ups are caused by either a lack of refrigerant, or a lack of air flow to the evaporator coils. If your air conditioner is freezing up, the first thing you should do is turn it off. If you continue to run it, the compressor could be damaged. Troubleshoot by checking the following items: 1. Thermostat temperature setting. If your thermostat is set below 70 degrees it could be causing your air conditioner to freeze up — and it’s actually not cooling your home any faster. 2. Air filter. A clogged, dirty air filter could be causing the issue. As mentioned above, change the filter if it’s been more than a month since the last change. 3. Vents. Make sure all vents are open to ensure air flow to the evaporator coil. 4. Evaporator coils. If the evaporator coils are blocked by dirt and debris, this could be cause of the problem. Usually the result of missing or cheap air filters. Cleaning a dirty coil could cost up to two thousand dollars to clean. 5. Fan. Your fan is what blows cool air through the ductwork in your home — and also helps circulate air back to your evaporator coil. We’d recommend calling us to have a look. 6. Refrigerant level. If your refrigerant level is low, this could signal a larger issue and we’d recommend calling us to have a look.

Are all air filters the same? How often should I replace them?

As mentioned above, you should regularly change your air filter to ensure the air conditioner is running efficiently — and not contributing to other maintenance problems, approximately every 30 days or when you get your electric bill. To change your filter, follow these steps: Choose the right size. Remove your old filter and measure it, or read your user’s manual. Choose a MERV. MERV stands for “minimum efficiency reporting value” and ranges from 1-20. The higher the MERV, the more effective the air filter. Too high a MERV rating can lead to airflow problem resulting in freeze-ups. Choose the type of filter. You can choose from fiberglass, washable, pleaded or electronic. If you can have a conversation through the filter and still make eye contact, it probably isn't the right filter. Economy style fiberglass filters will only collect 5% or so of the dirt. Pleaded filters will collect 20% and higher, but too high can also be bad as mentioned above. Washable filters are nice and tend to collect great but can be difficult to clean. Electronic is the best but are only effective when clean. I prefer low grade pleaded filters. Install it. Most air filters are extremely easy to install. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why is my air conditioner leaking condensation? Should I be worried?

One primary function of A/C units is to extract humidity from the air, so a little bit of condensation is natural. A properly functioning system can remove enough humidity from the air to fill a swimming pool over a season. However, leaks usually indicate that there’s a problem with the way the condensate is draining. The following things could be causing this issue: A clogged condensate line. A rusty condensate pan. A dirty or frozen evaporator coil. A low refrigerant level. Dirty air filter. Installation issues. If your unit is leaking, we’d recommend calling us to have a look.

Then you can spend $800 to do the job and you'll still be saving $1,100 Dollars - PLUS... you'll get the knowledge and experience for the next time you want to do a job yourself." CUSTOMER: "Deal!! Let's do it." CONTRACTOR: To get started you'll need tools. So you'll have to buy a welder, a grinder, a chop saw, a drill press, a welding hood, gloves and a few other things." CUSTOMER: "But I don't have all this equipment and I can't buy all of these for one job." CONTRACTOR: "Well then for another $300 more I'll let you rent my tools... and you'll still be saving $800 Dollars." CUSTOMER: "That's cutting into my savings. But I'll rent your tools." CONTRACTOR: "Okay! I'll be back on Saturday and we can start." CUSTOMER: "Wait. I can't on Saturday. I only have time today." CONTRACTOR: "Sorry, I only give lessons on Saturday, because I have to prioritize my time and my tools have to be at other jobs with other customers all week long. CUSTOMER: "Okay!!
